The Deputy Minister of Mahaweli Development and Environment Anuradha Jayaratne states that steps have been taken to pay compensation to the victims of the Uma Oya project who have not received compensations yet.
Responding to a question raised by MP Vijitha Herath, the Deputy Minister said that 5200 million rupees has already been paid as compensation to the victims.
Deputy Minister Jayaratne further said that delay has been caused as a result of sluggishness in estimation and other related processes. Another reason for the delay was demands made by the owners of the affected properties.
The Deputy Minister said a separate team has been appointed to carryout the estimation work. Measures have been taken to expedite the process by even dispatching more officers. Water leakage of Uma Oya has been reduced to 280 from 1400 liters per second.
