A sum of 212 Billion Rupees had been spent to mete out treatment to drug addicts last year. This is an unfortunate situation. This was stated by Dr. Samantha Kumara, Director of the Presidential Task Force For Drug Prevention. He revealed this information joining in a media conference held to enlighten the Puttalam District programme of the National Programme on a Drug Free Country.
Following a survey carried out IN 2015, the Government had to spend 212 billion rupees on for damages caused to health by tobacco and health alone. This clearly shows disaster level the country has fallen as a result of this issue. The figure does not include the money spent by the people to make purchases. It had been found that some of the law enforcement officials had also been collaborating with the racketeers. He said that some officers are still involved in it. When raids are being carried out, the villagers have said that it is of no use in informing the Police or the Excise officials about the racket but to take a decision beyond it.
A massive programme should be launched to bring this officials to the level of protecting the law. He added that the Presidential Task Force does not hesitate to take appropriate measures on the instructions of the President.
Responding to query raised by a journalist at the news conference State Minister Palitha Range Bandara said that President Maithripala Sirisena succeeded in saving the Former President from being taken to the electric chair. As such, he mentioned that the former President should express his gratitude to the incumbent President in this respect. He said that the people of Kurunegala had elected Mahinda Rajapaksa to Parliament. However, he does not attend Parliamentary sessions.
