The Government has launched a special programme with the intention of bringing closer the three wheeler to the commuter fraternity with more quality. Accordingly, a metre has been made mandatory for every three wheeler and the provision of a receipt. The Transport Ministry said that this programme would be effective from the 01st of next month.
The number of three wheelers registered in Sri Lanka is around one million 160 thousand. However, the Transport Ministry said that nearly about 900 thousand of them are operating. Metres have been fixed in a majority of the three wheelers. But the commuters claim that the prices recorded in these metres differ. Drivers of certain three wheelers levies various charges according to their whims and fancies.
The Government has unveiled this programme with the intention of finding solutions to all these issues. Accordingly the installation of metres which issue receipts has been made mandatory.
Chairman of the National Road Safety Council Sisira Kodagoda said that three wheeler drivers who do not have proper awareness of the new programme are indicating disappointment considering that it incurs a high expenditure.
Sisira Kodagoda said that it was made mandatory for the installation of a metre for every three wheeler. It was made mandatory along with a bill.
He opined that attention was drawn by them to several matters. They thought that they would have to incur a high expenditure for the fixing of a new metre. It is not so. But he said that the owners could pay the expenses they incur in adhering to the new standards in instalments. Discussions have already been held to launch a new strategy.
