2017 Miss Universe Pageant kicked off with 92 contestants, who were eliminated by stages that included the geographic division, swimsuit and evening gown modeling and a round of questions. This year’s competition had more contestants than ever before. Three countries competed for the first time: Cambodia, Laos and Nepal. And after a 45 year absence, Iraq returned to the competition.
22-year-old Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters of South Africa has been crowned the new Miss Universe. Ms. Nel-Peters holding hands with runner-up, 22-year-old Laura Gonzalez of Colombia, when pageant host Steve Harvey called out, “South Africa!”
