3D-mapping drones battling cliff erosion

British academics think they may have found a way to better understand their coastline’s erosion, using cameras carried by drones to map changes in cliff faces. Senior lecturer in applied geomorphology at the University of Sussex, Dr. John Barlow and his team, have been 3D mapping Telscombe Cliffs in East Sussex. In just eight minutes the drone’s camera is able to create a high-resolution topographical map of the cliff face.

Traditional methods of monitoring coastal erosion often involve analysis of historical aerial photographs which do not provide information on individual rock fall events. Another method is terrestrial laser scanning which is extremely costly and labour-intensive, the university adds.
