Crimea celebrates five years since annexation by Russia

Two hundred Russian bikers unfurled a giant Russian flag, kicking off celebrations in Sevastopol marking the fifth anniversary of Moscow’s annexation of the Crimean peninsula from Ukraine.

The Night Wolves motorcycle club favoured by President Vladimir Putin, drove in a motorcade through the city and spread a 1,423 square meter white-blue-red banner on the highest hill on the outskirts. The festival continued with a concert and a bike show. According to the Russian media, President Putin is expected to visit Crimea on Monday (March 18) on the day of the official holiday. Russia annexed the Crimean peninsula from Ukraine in 2014, triggering several rounds of international sanctions.
