Import of substandard buses is banned

Minister Arjuna Ranatunga says that steps will be taken to ban the importation of substandard private buses. The Minister said that lorries transporting goods were being modified as buses and are being used for the transport of passengers.

Minister Arjuna Ranatunge was expressing his views to the media after paying a courtesy call on the Asgiriya Mahanayake the Most Ven. Warakagoda Sri Gnanarathana Thera. The Minister was accompanied by State Minister Ashok Abeysinghe.

Minister Arjuna Ranatunge said that he had requested for a report within the next two weeks. A good standard for the country will be discussed with the relevant authorities and thereafter he intended to apprise also the Cabinet that buses of a particular standard is needed for the country.

State Minister Ashok Abeysinghe mentioned that they had ordered 160 compartments for the railways. In addition 12 locomotives for operations on the upcountry rail track and 12 power sets have been ordered. The first power set has been received. It was operating as the Uttaradevi train. He also said that they have begun to modernize the Kelani Valley rain track.

After this event both Ministers undertook an inspection tour of he Kandy Railway Station.
