Congo Ebola centre set on fire after armed attack

Armed assailants attacked an Ebola treatment centre in Butembo, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, setting off a fire and becoming embroiled in an extended gun battle with security forces. French medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres , which runs the Butembo centre together with the ministry condemned the attack and said its efforts were focused on the immediate safety of patients and staff. On Thursday MSF confirmed it was suspending its activities in the region until further notice. Congolese health minister Oly Ilunga Kalenga and World Health Organization officials visited the centre on Thursday.

The minister said the MSF teams fighting Ebola are there to ensure the population don’t suffer a great loss, with over 500 deaths in the region since the outbreak began in August 2018.Thirty-eight suspected Ebola patients and 12 confirmed cases were in the Butembo centre at the time of the attack.
