Special Court rejects objections filed by Gotabhaya

The Special High Court that overruled the preliminary objections raised in the case filed against seven persons including former Defense Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa today ordered to take up for hearing a case filed against them. The former defense secretary and six others have been indicted on charges of misappropriating 39.9 million rupees in connection with the construction of the D. A. Rajapaksa Museum and Memorial.

The defendants are Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, Harshana de Silva, Keminda Attygalle, Abraham Galappatthi, Badra Uadulawathie, Mahinda Sagala and Mallika Kumari Senadheera. They are charged with criminal breach of trust, conspiracy and aid and abetting.

The Permanent High Court at bar decided to seek a response whether they are guilty or not guilty for these charges. One defendant did not appear in Court today. As there is a need to obtain a reply from all defendants at the same time, the case was postponed until the 22nd of this month.

The defendants had filed preliminary objections claiming that the judiciary had no authority to take up this case in the High Court at bar. In the meantime, the first defendant in the case Gotabhaya Rajapaksa arrive in Court ten minutes late. As such the High Court at bar warned him to be present in Courts in time.
