President says this year will be a turning point in the economy

President Maithripala Sirisena has called on the entire public service to join in making this year the turning point of the country’s economy. He extended this invitation at a special gathering held at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall.

A meeting was held today to apprise the political authority and public officials with respect to the special projects launched by the Presidential Secretariat on the Grama Shakthi National programme mooted under the guidance of President Maithripala Sirisena to alleviate poverty and for the welfare of the people. It was organised to brief them on the targets set for this year. The Grama Shakthi programme has been successfully launched as a priority project for the alleviation of poverty in rural areas. This programme has been launched with the aim of moulding a person who can stand up with self-strength eliminating poverty through the production process.
The aspiration of the President is to further expand this programme this year.

A Grama Shakthi National Week has been declared from the 18th to the 24th of this month in this respect. In this context it is desired to expand several programme during this year including the Narcotics Prevention National programme, the Kidney Disease Prevention National programme, the Environmental Conservation National Programme and the National Programme for the Protection of Children.

These programmes are being implemented under the guidance of the President with the objective of achieving sustainable goals in keeping with the UN’s sustainable development goals and building a poverty-free Sri Lanka by 2025. During the meeting held today a programme with new targets for the year 2019 was introduced further educating the political authority and the state machinery on these national programmes. On this occasion, President Maithripala Sirisena said that a circular will be issued to obtain a permit for all machinery used in the felling of trees, which will be mandatory.
