3D printed hearts allow surgeons to practice before an operation

Researchers at the University of Washington are 3D printing models of a patient’s heart to allow the surgical team to practice a catheter procedure before they perform it.

Catheters, long, thin devices that can be manipulated from outside the body, are used to operate inside the heart without the need for surgery.

Doctors say the 3D models give them a better understanding of the architecture of the particular heart they were working with that day.

A scans of the patient’s heart is turned into a three-dimensional model on a computer which is checked to make sure only the parts relevant to the forthcoming procedure are retained.
