Snowed-in German town declares state of emergency

The snowed-in southern German town of Berchtesgaden in Bavaria declared a state of emergency and called for the army’s help to clear snow from roofs of public and private buildings.

The town, on the border with Austria and south of Salzburg, has been hit by heavy snowfall for days and another half metre was expected. Schools have been closed since the beginning of the week and train services were suspended because travel was deemed unsafe due to falling trees overloaded with snow. In January 2006, fifteen people were killed, twelve of them children, when the roof of an ice skating rink in nearby Bad Reichenhall collapsed in heavy snow.
