Half a million Filipinos jostle to touch Jesus Christ statue in annual procession

Half a million Filipino Catholics flocked to the annual procession of a four century-old statue of Jesus Christ in Manila. The statue, whose surface mysteriously turned dark when it was carved in 1606 in Mexico, is believed to heal diseases and grant wishes to those who pray and are able to touch it.Barefoot devotees who seek to thank God or ask for wishes to be granted and good fortune jostled to climb onto and touch the black statue, while some threw and waved white towels at the start of the procession before dawn.Atop a wooden carriage pulled by two sets of rope, the statue, known as the Black Nazarene, will pass through a more than six kilometre route around the old commercial and residential districts of the Philippine capital before it returns to Quaipo Church. Police estimate around five million Filipinos will take part in the procession as it goes on until past midnight.More than 8 in 10 Filipinos belong to the Catholic faith
