Kurdish militia’s control in Manbij declines

Kurdish militia’s control in the northern Syrian city of Manbij seems to decline, after the United States decided to pull its troops out of the region. In late 2015, the U.S.-led coalition began to offer the Kurdish militia weapons to fight against extremist organizations. Thus, the U.S.-backed People’s Protection Units (YPG) continued to expand its control in the region. The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) was founded in Oct 2015. Although the SDF stressed that they are not the Kurdish militia, an American commander pointed out that the SDF was developed from the YPG. By the second half of 2017, the SDF took over Raqqah which is the former capital of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and Ter Zor under the support of the United States. They have exterminated extremist organizations who settled in the region east of the Euphrates River, and resisted the river crossing of the Syrian government forces. At present, most of the areas actually controlled by the Kurdish militia are desolate areas, that take up 28 percent of Syria’s national territory. The militia is the second largest force, next only to the Syrian government forces.
