Residents flee Nigerian lake town after Islamists kill at least 10

Residents of Baga, a Nigerian fishing town on Lake Chad, fled their hometown in thousands after Islamist militants and Nigerian troops clashed in the area in the latest attack of a string of strikes on military bases in the northeast. The insurgents from Islamist group Boko Haram, stepped up attacks in the run-up to a presidential election in which security is a campaign issue. The Nigerian army said in a statement the militants attacked a military base in Baga, in eastern Borno state. The borders of Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon meet on the lake. Residents, who are taking refuge at the state capital of Maiduguri.
