‘Baby talk’ is more important than it sounds

According to research, one of the silliest languages could also be the most important and it’s also one that fathers tend to be not be as good at as mothers.

Research from the University of Washington suggests when it comes to helping infants learn to talk, it’s not just how much parents say.

The team at the Institute for Learning & Brain Sciences say parents can improve their child’s language development by adopting a style called ‘parentese,’ which involves using proper words but talking slowly and clearly, often with exaggerated vowels and intonation.

Parentese is not what many people think of as ‘baby talk’ which is made up of nonsense words and silly sounds.

The team coached some parents to use more language when interacting with children which had a positive effects on the children.
