Ice and Snow Nadam Festival wows visitors in north China

The 16th Ice and Snow Nadam Festival that opened in Hulun Buir City, north China’s Inner Mongolia on Sunday is wowing visitors with Mongolian folk customs, traditional sports and modern matches. The Nadam Festival is a traditional Mongolian fair which is believed to have existed for centuries.

The word “Nadam” means games and entertainment. The festival this year features sports such as horse racing, camel racing, traditional wrestling, archery, motorcycle racing and car racing. Despite the freezing temperatures that gripped the region, the athletes are braving the cold to show off their skills. In the grassland where the camel race takes place, camels are ridden by ethnic Mongol herdsmen wearing traditional blue, green and red lambskin outfits. After the starting gun went off, the camels’ hooves kicked up a flurry of ice and snow to the cheers of hundreds of spectators. Aside from racing, the camels also entertained the visitors by dragging sleighs on the snow that blanketed the grassland. If one finds themselves fed up with animals, he may turn to enjoy the traditional local dancing, arrow-shooting or other games.
