Russians take to ice as two iconic rinks in Moscow

Muscovites can once again enjoy skating at the foot of the Kremlin and the colorful domes of St. Basil’s Cathedral as the large annual ice rink opened in the city’s famed Red Square. The rink is a seasonal addition to the famed location where the Soviet Union’s founder Vladimir Lenin is entombed, and has delighted skaters every winter since 2005. The rink’s website says it can accommodate up to 450 skaters at once. For those looking for an unusual way to celebrate the New Year the rink offers to mark it on the ice to the chimes of the clock on Kremlin’s Spasskaya tower.
