Turning plastic waste into firefighting, oil-spill cleaning materials

Researchers at the National University of Singapore have found a wide range of applications for the plastic waste that is polluting the planet’s waters and shores.

The team from the university’s Mechanical Engineering department start out with a light, soft, flexible material known as PET  fibre, obtained commercially, made from crushed and shredded waste like plastic bottles.

After it is ‘cured’ by the addition of chemicals and freeze-drying, the result is a compact, solid and absorbent “aerogel”.

When coated with fire retardant chemicals, the research team said the PET aerogel demonstrated an ability to withstand temperatures of up to 620 degree Celsius.
