Chinese demand for the pungent durian drives growth of plantations in Malaysia

Durian hotpot, durian barbecue even durian pizza just a few of the many ways that the stinky, spiky tropical fruit is consumed in China, a fast-growing export destination, prompting Malaysia to develop thousands of acres to cash in the unprecedented demand. Durians may be banned in some airports, public transport and hotels in Southeast Asia for its pungent smell, but the Chinese are huge fans, creating dishes not found even in countries where the fruit is grown. China’s durian imports rose 15 percent last year to nearly 350,000 tonnes, worth $510 million, according to the United Nations’ trade database.
