World’s largest ‘charquekan’ dish seeks to push llama meat from Bolivia to international kitchens

Dozens of chefs gathered in the rural Bolivian region of Oruro to make the world’s largest ‘charquekan’, a local delicacy whose main ingredient is llama meat.

The event is part of a local fair that seeks to promote the consumption of llama meat at home and abroad. According to local officials, more than 500 kilos of llama meat was mixed together with eggs, corn and potatoes to make the dish.

And the local culinary delight got the thumbs up from President Evo Morales.

Llama meat is common amongst Bolivia’s traditional indigenous communities, but abroad it still remains a niche dish.

Locals say the llama brings with it many more health benefits than traditional meats like beef.
