Moscow zoo welcomes newborn gorilla

A rare lowland gorilla baby was born recently in the Moscow Zoo, the zoo administration said on Wednesday (November 21).The ten-day old baby girl, 40 centimetres in height and weighing about one and a half kilograms, looked quite comfortable in her mother’s arms on Wednesday, surrounded by other members of the troop. The happy parents are 23-year-old female Kira from the German Krefeld Zoo and 20-year-old male Vizuri, from the zoo in Basel, Switzerland, both are now settled in Moscow.Western lowland gorilla is a critically endangered species on the IUCN Red List, as poaching, deforestation and Ebola virus in the gorilla’s living zones negatively affected its chances of survival.According to Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the population of western lowland gorillas in the wild is estimated at approximately 100,000 animals, some studies demonstrate that it’s population declined by more than 60 percent in the last 20-25 years.
