Runners feeling the heat in Oman Desert Marathon

Competitors in the Oman Desert Marathon were forced to battle soaring temperatures during the third stage of the race as they reached the halfway point in the gruelling challenge. The 107-strong field faced 40 degree heat as they entered the point in the race where they are entirely self-sufficient, except for water refills at checkpoints. The 29km route the longest so far consisted of undulating dunes on soft sand. Moroccan brothers Rachid and Mohamed El Murabity appear in complete control, the former with a total time of 6 hours 10 minutes and 18 seconds holding a narrow advantage of 3 minutes 32 seconds over his younger sibling. Aziza Alraji, also from Morocco is building a substantial lead in the women’s race.
