Speaker accused of arbitrarily ignoring the Executive and the Judiciary

Ministers and Parliamentarians have strongly accused the Speaker of acting in a manner arbitrarily ignoring the Executive and the Judiciary. They made this accusation addressing a news conference held at the Parliamentary Complex today. They also expressed views with respect to several matters.
Minister Udaya Gammanpila said that the Parliament had no authority to determine if anything is constitutional or not. It is only the Supreme Court that is vested with this power. Attempts were made yesterday to grab the power of the Supreme Court. The Speaker said that he wished to announce that he took a voice vote and also wished to state that the Government had no majority. Did he mention that the no confidence motion was approved with a majority? He did not made any mention. As such the Speaker has become a joke by dispatching this motion.
Minister S.B. Dissanayake said that what the Speaker should have done was first to read the statement sent by the President. But he did not do so. He had no right to reject without reading the President’s statement. But he did it. He should understand that he should behave impartially. As such since the President believed that a chaotic situation would arise in the country he dissolved Parliament. Minister S.B. Dissanayake said that the Speaker should assume the responsibility of all these developments in the country.
