Democrats win three of four congressional seats, lose governorship in Iowa

In a hotly contested campaign in the Midwest, Democrats won three of four congressional seats in the state of Iowa, but lost the governorship.Voters in Iowa turned out in record numbers for this midterm election. Ahead of the vote, the governorship and three of the four House seats were all Republican. At the Democratic Election Party, the early signs suggested a blue wave was possible. Two flipped seats means it is now the Democrats who control three out of four congressional seats.Among the Democrat winners was Cindy Axne, Iowa’s third congressional district winner. However in the end, Democrat candidate Fred Hubble’s bid for governor fell short, with Republican Kim Reynolds just holding on. The Democrats also failed to flip control of Iowa’s Republican-held state legislature. Amid an ongoing trade dispute between the U.S. and China, which has caused a slump in commodity prices, some feel the political landscape could change if trade frictions continue.
