Solar powered UAV stays airborne for a year, say developers

A solar-powered unmanned aircraft that can remain airborne for up to a year has successfully passed the first stages of testing, according to its developers.
Silicon-Valley based UAVOS say the High Altitude Pseudo Satellite (HAPS) ApusDuo aircraft can reach altitudes of up to 20,000m (65,600 ft) – higher than commercial aircraft.
The 10-metre wingspan prototype is made to monitor the Earth’s surface and send back valuable information in real-time using internet and radio communications UAVOS said.
The aircraft uses control algorithms to autonomously bend and flex its two long parallel wings to remain airborne for long periods.
UAVOS Lead developer, Aliaksei Stratsilatau, said the development of solar-powered aircraft is increasing due to solar-technology becoming more efficient and affordable, in a statement on the company website.
The hope is this new technology will broaden the scope for monitoring environmental conditions, weather and illegal activity in areas with limited infrastructure, such as the North and South poles, deserts and tropical forests
The final version of the aircraft is set to measure 28 m (91.9 ft).
