Six Palestinians killed in border protests – Gaza health officials

Six Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces on Friday (October 12) during protests along Gaza’s border, Gaza health officials said. The Israeli military said its forces shot and killed people who had crossed the fence and approached an army post. The Israeli military said that the demonstrators, numbering around 14,000, had been “hurling rocks, explosive devices, fire bombs and grenades” at Israeli troops and at the fence. In a statement issued late on Friday it said that soldiers saw people climbing the fence in southern Gaza and placing an explosive device on the barrier, which set it on fire.

The troops opened fire and “the assailants were killed,” the statement said, without any injuries to Israeli forces.Palestinian protesters are demanding an end to an Israeli and Egyptian blockade on the narrow coastal strip, which is home to two million Gazans. They also seek the right to return to lands that Palestinians fled or were driven from during Israel’s founding in 1948.
