Belgium to turn off a sixth nuclear reactor, raising fears of power shortage

Electrabel, part of France’s Engie, will take off-line Belgium’s sixth reactor out of seven from this evening for refuelling and regular maintenance. Belgium’s energy production is plunging as nuclear reactors are taken off-line for repairs, raising questions about how the country will cope with the power shortfall as winter approaches and when the reactors are phased out in five years’ time. Seven nuclear reactors, four at Doel near Antwerp and three at Tihange in Liege, are operated by Electrabel and produce about half of Belgium’s electricity when they are fully operational. Five have already been shut down for repairs and maintenance. Energy expert at the Federal Planning Bureau, Danielle Devogelaer, said that a country having to make up for this kind of a deficit in electricity is almost unprecedented.
