Neuville slips up as Tanak extends overnight lead

World Rally Championship leader Thierry Neuville suffered a huge setback as his Hyundai slipped into a ditch at the 11th stage of the Wales Rally, allowing his rival Ott Tanak to increase his overnight lead in the rally. Estonian Tanak was just shy of 30 seconds ahead of the Belgian going into Saturday’s stages, but Neuville’s slip up on the day’s second stage saw him drop from second to eighth losing around a minute to Tanak in the process as fans tried their best to push the car back onto the track.

World champion Sebastien Ogier, who has also lost time to the speedy Tanak, gained numerous places to climb to second in the rally after having been down in fifth overnight. Neuville leads a tight championship race 13 points ahead of Tanak and 23 ahead of Ogier.
