Robotic cockroach can walk on land and swim underwater

The mini robot is being developed by researchers at Harvard University. Its inspiration is the tiny cockroach.Just like the ugly insect, this tiny robot can walk on both land and water, and maneuver underwater. It’s called HAMR – an acronym which stands for Harvard’s Ambulatory Microrobot. The tiny robot has footpads that rely on surface tension when it wants to walk on the surface of water, but it can also emit a high voltage to break the water surface tension and dive underneath.Researchers envision the tiny bots getting into small spaces where people cannot go.

They say the devices could one day help with rescue operations – such as the recent saving of a teenage soccer team from caves in Thailand. At the moment, the tiny bot needs a ramp to get out of the water because of the force of surface tension. But researchers are working to improve its motion. They want it to be able to get of out the water without a ramp – and think the adhesive feet of a gecko or a frog’s jumping ability could offer a solution.
