China celebrates National Day

People across China celebrated National Day, marking the 69th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. A total of 2,018 volunteers gathered in Xi’an, capital of northwest China’s Shaanxi Province to sing “Ode to the Motherland”, a popular patriotic song. In Beijing and east China’s Ningbo City, crowds of people spontaneously broke out in song, singing the national anthem to celebrate the holiday.
Meanwhile, thousands of people in Hong Kong gathered at Victoria Harbour to watch a fireworks display celebrating the 69th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. The display lasted for 23 minutes with thousands of fireworks being discharged from four barges moored in the harbour. On October 1 1949, Mao Zedong declared the formation of the People’s Republic of China. Since then, the first day of October has been a day of patriotism and national celebration.
