Malaysia’s former jailed politician Anwar Ibrahim begins by-election campaign

Malaysia’s former jailed political leader Anwar Ibrahim submitted his nomination papers to contest in a by-election, where a victory would mark his return to parliament and bring him one step closer to becoming the country’s next prime minister. Anwar is running for a parliamentary seat in Port Dickson, a beach town on the country’s west coast. Anwar was current Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad’s deputy in the 1990s, but fell out with his mentor during the 1997-99 Asian financial crisis. He was eventually sacked by the ruling party after challenging Mahathir’s government, and was arrested and jailed on disputed charges of sodomy and corruption.
