Malaysia foils attempt to smuggle more than 400 exotic animals

Malaysian customs officials foiled an attempt to smuggle into the country more than 400 exotic animals including two orang-utans, crocodiles and rare birds from Indonesia.

The animals, which were being transported in a boat from Indonesia, were intercepted in the waters of Perlis, near Malaysia’s border with Thailand. Three Indonesians were arrested in the operation, which also uncovered about 350 sugar gliders in the consignment.

Malaysia has been singled out by conservationists as a major transit point for the illegal trafficking of endangered species, as well as products made from them.
