Heavy rain triggers flash flood in northern Indian

A flash flood triggered by heavy rain hit the hill town of Kullu, northern India, leaving at least 25 people stranded. Residents watched from rooftops as fast-moving water flowed through the town in Himachal Pradesh state. Kullu’s deputy commissioner said that authorities were working to evacuate people and that a helicopter would be deployed to rescue those stranded. Scores of people die each year in India from flooding and landslides during monsoon rains.
Meanwhile, flash flooding in Tunisia’s Nabeul province led to the death of five people after a full day of heavy rainfall, the largest in the country’s history. Tunisian news agency Tunis Afrique Presse reported that one villager was electrocuted and four others had drowned as a result of the floods. Roads were damaged and homes were submerged in volumes exceeding 200mm of water, also damaging agricultural lands.
