Indonesia presidential candidates draw numbers ahead of first campaign

Indonesia’s presidential hopefuls drew their candidate numbers, as the country looks ahead to the vote in April 2019.At next year’s election on April 17, incumbent President Joko Widodo will run against retired commander, Prabowo Subianto, whom he narrowly defeated in 2014. At the candidate numbers draw on Friday evening, Widodo and his running mate, Muslim cleric Ma’ruf Amin, drew number 1 while Subianto, who paired up with Sandiaga Uno, got number 2. Both candidates called for a peaceful and smooth democratic process in their speeches following the draw.

Now each is pushing a nationalistic economic platform, but issues of race and religion loom large in the battle to run the world’s largest Muslim-majority country. The official election campaign will kick off on September 23. Both sides are battling for the support of Indonesia’s roughly 80 million millennials, who form more than 40 percent of voters.
