Researchers recreate memories of faces from brain data

Canadian-based neuroscientists have published research showing they can reconstruct images seen by volunteers based on their brain activity gathered by electroencephalography, the first time this has been done.

The team from the University of Toronto Scarborough hooked test subjects up to EEG equipment and showed them images of faces. Volunteers’ brain activity was recorded and used to digitally recreate an approximation of the image seen by them on computer screen, using a technique based on machine learning algorithms.

Previously researchers have reconstructed images based on visual stimuli using functional magnetic resonance imaging data, but not EEG data.
