Tanak leads Turkey rally as car burns amidst dramatic day

Estonia’s Ott Tanak capitalised on a string of misfortunate events that hampered many of his rivals as crashes, broken vehicles and cars catching fire provided plenty of drama.Earlier in the day, overnight leader Thierry Neuville saw his chances of a first World Rally Championship title fade away after a broken suspension cost him dearly. That left the field open for world champion Sebastien Ogier and Norway’s Andreas Mikkelsen to battle it out for the rally win with the Norwegian.

But Mikkelsen suffered a transmission problem and Ogier crashed into a tree, allowing Tanak to move into a 13 second lead ahead of Jari-Matti Latvala by the end of the day’s racing with only four stages remaining.Irish driver Craig Breen had to escape his car after it set alight into flames before local firefighters extinguished the flames to leave behind a charred shell of his Citroen on the track.
