Independence of the judiciary consolidated under the present Government; Justice Minister

Justice Minister Thalatha Athukorale has said that the independence of the judiciary has been totally consolidated under the Good Governance administration.

The Minister said that within the first week of October, they hoped to launch the House of Justice Project comprising 40 courts within the Courts Complex in Colombo. All this was being done giving due respect to the judiciary. Since she is the Justice Minister she is not the head of the judiciary. Some consider that it is the Minister who sort out all judicial issues. This opinion is wrong. She added that they have consolidated the independence of the judiciary under the present Government.

The Minister was addressing a function organized for the laying of a foundation stone for a new judicial complex in Ratnapura. The Project is estimated to cost 2500 million rupees. Action has been taken to build the new judiciary complex due to the congestion within the judiciary in the Ratnapura District and the dilapidated condition of the existing buildings.

Sabaragamuwa Governor Niluka Ekanayake, Parliamentarian A.A. Wijetunge and Chief Justice Priyasath Depp were among those present on the occasion.
