Nadal beats Wawrinka to reach Rogers Cup quarter-finals

World number one Rafael Nadal of Spain fought off a spirited challenge from Switzerland’s Stan Wawrinka to reach the Rogers Cup quarter-finals with a 7-5 7-6 (4) victory in Toronto. Wawrinka, who has slipped to 195 in the world rankings after a series of injuries, held on in the first set until Nadal broke in the 12th game to take the set.

Nadal broke again to lead 2-0 in the second set, but successive breaks by Wawrinka gave him a 4-2 lead. Serving for the set at 5-4, Wawrinka lost his serve thanks to a glorious forehand pass from Nadal. In the tiebreak, Nadal clinched the match on his second match point with a forehand crosscourt return to wrap up the match after two hours, seven minutes.
