Mixed media art exhibition imagines Times Square underwater

How would Times Square look if climate change caused it to become submerged under 26 feet (8 meters) of water? That’s the theme of a new art exhibition called “Unmoored.” Acclaimed artist Mel Chin unveiled his large-scale sculpture and mixed reality piece in New York City on Wednesday (July 11).The sculpture stands 24 feet (7 meters) by 34 feet (10 meters) by 60 feet (18 meters). The piece is an animatronic hull of a 19th century clipper shipwreck designed to look like the skeletal remains of a marine mammal. The sculpture is called “Wake”.Visitors can view the sculpture and Times Square through their mobile devices or with Microsoft HoloLens headsets which are designed to project holograms. With the help of digital media, viewers will see the decaying ship and images of other boats and marine debris float through Times Square.
