At least 18 killed in Abidjan flooding after heavy rains

At least 18 people were killed by flooding in Ivory Coast’s commercial capital Abidjan on Tuesday after intense rainfall overnight. A rushing flood of brown water struck the tropical, lagoon-side city of about five million people in the early hours, carrying away cars, destroying homes and leaving hundreds stranded. One woman, a resident of the Cocody Riviera neighbourhood, described how she escaped the rising flood waters with her children by breaking a hole in the ceiling of her home. The government reported the provisional toll of 18 deaths on its website. Another 115 people have been rescued and are in shelter.
