Smog covers north Indian hill town due to western dust storm

Residents of India’s northern hill town of Shimla, woke up to a thick layer of smog blanketing their city owing to recent dusty winds from western part of the country. The valley was seen completely covered in smog with visibility up to 60 metres only making the hilly roads prone to accidents. According to the director of Indian Meteorological department, the main reason for this was a steep pressure gradient. The difference in the pressure brought deadly dusty winds from Rajasthan and other parts of western India to Shimla, through Indian capital New Delhi and northern Chandigarh city. Storms are common at this time of the year, the beginning of the rainy season in South Asia, but the severity of the weather this year, and the human cost, has been unusual.
