Incredibly rare Guam Kingfisher hatches in U.S.

The hatching of this tiny bird is special indeed. The chick is a female Guam Kingfisher, one of the world’s most endangered bird species that are extinct in the wild. This newborn hatched on May 17th at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Virginia, after 22 days of artificial incubation. It’s currently being raised by humans since its parents “did not display appropriate parenting behaviours”, according to the institute. The colorful birds were once native to the Pacific island of Guam where they were last seen in the wild in 1988. To save the bird from extinction 29 Kingfishers were taken into human care for a breeding program that this chick is now a part of.
