Sri Lanka has earned a record income through the export of fish last year.
Earnings from fish exports during the year 2010 were in the region of 19,834 million rupees. In 2011, it amounted to 26,363 million rupees.
Speaking at a special discussion held at the Fisheries Ministry, Minister Rajitha Senaratne said that this was an increase of 21 percent when compared with the 2010 figure. He revealed at this meeting that the import of fish products had gradually declined in the last few years. Although the import of fish products in 2010 amounted to 80,013 metric tons, this figure further declined to 71,413 metric tons during last year.
The Minister said that the reduction amounted to 13 percent.
