Youth Services Council’s Hambantota District Centre opened
President Rajapaksa has ceremonially opened the Hambanthota District Center of the National Youth Services Council.
Addressing the gathering following the inauguration the President said that it is the responsibility of one and all to mould young people to enable them to take over the responsibility of the country’s future. The President said that the government is not expecting development that is confined only to certain areas including Colombo. They expect to work more intelligently and uplift the entire country. Human Resources have to be developed for this purpose.
The President pointed out that they expect to create disciplined youths with good qualities. The background to create such people has to be created. He was confident that that the youth will take maximum benefit out of such institutes. He said the country and its future belong to them.
The Youth Centre is constructed at Yayawatta in Tangalle. It consists of a Dance Academy, a Gym, and a facility to follow technical courses and lecture halls. It has the required facilities to follow courses in photography as well. Ministers Chamal Rajapaksa, Mahinda Amaraweera, and Prof. G.L. Peiris participated in the event.

This is a great idea for the youth who would probably succeed at any rate. I was wondering though, what about the youth who are struggling, are homeless, have addictions however want to make positive changes in their lives. Where do these youth go? My understanding is that there is a very low rate of youth who graduate from high school. What is the drop out rate in Hambantota? How do you connect with the youth who have dropped out because they have no place to live and are not skilled? I am very pleased to see this positive step taken to give additional support to youth.
