Sarath Fonseka’s weapons transactions bared

December 9, 2009 Featured, Local News View Comments

4Information is bared as to how Sarath Fonseka used his relatives to get down weapons while he was serving as the Army Commander. In the meantime in Parliament yesterday, Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said the Defence Secretary was able to prevent attempts made to get down unnecessary weapons after the war ended.

Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage said that according to an article posted in Asian Tribune, Danuna Tilakaratne had told a media conference that he is not aware of any matter related to arms procurement by the Army. It has been carried out by a representative of the Company.

The Minister said the Army Commander has an allocation of 25 million rupees to procure arms. During the entire past, after he assumed duties, arms had been bought from a company named Hicorp International Inc., which is registered in the United States. 95 percent of this allocation had been procured through this company. The registration form of the Company had been filled and signed by Danuna Tilakaratne. This activity had started since 2005 immediately after the former Army Commander assumed duties. The Company had been registered in 2005. He queried as to whether it conforms to the ethics of the Army to buy weapons from the Commander’s son-in-law’s company.

Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said it was Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa who sent back the weapons ship which Sarath Fonseka attempted to get down. The ship reached Colombo port. Sarath Fonseka had said that he needed 30,000 artillery shells. The Defence Secretary and the Tender Board had intervened and suspended the procurement of the arms. He expressed doubt that this may be the reason for the differences that had surfaced between the former Army Commander and the Defence Secretary.

This mud slinging is very ugly. When S,F was used then not a mum but the moment he is not with them they start mud slinging. I have always been a supporter of M.R. but if people and politicians carry on in this ugly way M.R. will start losing more and more votes. Dont be ungrateful for the services rendered by S.F. whatever is wrong with him in other ways.

Why cant our people engage in clean politics instead of resorting to these ugly tactics. It is very unbecoming.

  2. Farook says:

This is indisputable evidence Danuna has a weapons selling company. This is very bad when thousands of army soldiers were dying.

Government should investigate this fully and imprison everyone involved in this fraud.

The original article in the Asian Tribune has produced some documentary evidence regarding these transactions. Danuna has threatened to sue Asian Tribune, but the interesting part of the claim was the company HiCorp was going to sue unless paid millions and quite about accusations about him. Since then Asian Tribune has published more evidence and not withdrawn any of their claims. So now it is upto Danuna to go the next step, but I got a feeling if there is any truth in these claims, then if it goes to courts more evidence will be produced in the court of law.

The earlier comment talks about disappointment in MR camp for throwing dirt at SF. Trust me I am not a MR fan but, this mud slinging started by SF (me. my and I) at MR and he was very ungrateful as it looks like he has forgotten who gave him the opportunity to be the Army commander and also all the support to continue the war, when opposition and West was trying to stop it. All our past Presidents starting from JRJ to Ranil never would have supported him and Ranil called him to be a weak commander who is not even fit enough to command the Salvation Army.

So it is SF (me, my and I) is the most ungrateful, arrogant and selfish person I have come across in recent times in politics.

How you gonna say this is a mud sliding. If the diffence ministry has all the evidence and paper work this is a definately a true alligation. You can’t point out everything is a mud campaign that’s one of an easy way to get rid of the alligation. The ministry has the clear document that’s why they are gonna go to the supreme court. You can’t avoid the alligation just by saying a mud campaign.

  6. SAM PERERA says:

IF THE NEWS IS TRUE,NOTHING WRONG WITH IT,IT’S A LEAGAL DEAL.THOSE DAYS MILITARY PURCHASESS CAN DO THROUGH UNDER ANY QUALIFIED COMPANY.LATER THAT DEFENCE SECRETARY MADE RULES TO BUY ALL WEAPONS THROUGH HIS COMPANY.ALL WEAPONS THERE AFTER BOUGHT AND PAID THROUGH HIM.HOW RIGHT IT IS?.STOP THE MUD SLINGING AND DO CLEAN POLITICS.
