More locomotives to improve train services

July 28, 2010 Local News View Comments

More locomotives will be added to service. Railways Commercial Superintendent Wijaya Samarasinghe pointed out that the Railways Department has decided to operate many “M” type engines after a lapse of eight years.

He pointed out that the operation of trains was paralyzed to a considerable extent in the past due to the shortage of “M” type locomotives. Taking this situation in to consideration, a committee comprising engineers and officials was appointed on the advice of the Transport Minister Kumara Welgama and the guidance of the Railways General Manager. The Committee was tasked to look into the possibility of acquiring “M” type of locomotives within a short period. As such, it has been possible to increase the number of such locomotives to 62. Due to the increase of locomotives from 40 to 62, the Railways Department now has sufficient engines for operation. He said all these engines are now operative enabling to enhance the service.
